It’s often very difficult to find the time to apply advanced SEO techniques to your website. It can also be very costly if you have someone else to do it for you.
Here are 15 very easy and quick updates for your web pages that will help you generate higher rankings and more targeted traffic.
Most of these techniques will only take about a minute to complete so you can very productive work done in the shortest possible time.
Here goes:
Page Title
1. Check the length of your page title. If it’s under 50 characters then add an additional word. Something like ’shop’, ‘company’, ’supplier’, ’services’, ‘cheap’, or even a name of a local town or county.
2. Make sure your key phrase is at the beginning of your title. Rather than ‘Neil Thurlwell - Higher Rankings in 15 Minutes’ go for ‘Higher Rankings in 15 Minutes by Neil Thurlwell’. Google prefers key phrases as close to the beginning of your title as possible.
Meta Data
3. Keywords - Make the keywords specific to the page they are on. Ensure that your more important phrases are at the beginning. If you are really brave then just delete them as Google pays no attention to them.
4. Description - Make sure the main keyword you want your page found for is as close to the beginning of the descriptions as possible. Ideally it should start in the first 3 words.
Headings and Subheadings
5. Ensure you have only one h1 (heading 1) tag on each page.
6. Check that every heading relates to your content directly below it. So if a heading contains a keyword, make sure this keyword is in the first sentence below the heading.
Internal Linking
7. When linking to other pages within your website, don’t just call them ‘products’, ’services’, ‘gallery’ etc. Try adding an additional word to these to describe the page the link goes to. Something like ‘Marketing Products’, ‘SEO Services’, ‘Web Design Gallery’. These describe the page that the link goes to much better.
8. When linking to your home page, don’t link to ‘index.php’, ‘index.htm’ etc. Link to your full domain name without this on the end. So rather than me linking to http://www.neilthurlwell.co.uk/index.php I would just link to http://www.neilthurlwell.co.uk. Two address for the same page is very bad in the eyes of Google.
9. Add the ‘nofollow’ rule to pages that are not intended to get rankings. Pages like ‘Contact’ and ‘Terms’ etc.
External Linking
10. Link to high rankings sites that are relevant to the content of your page. This may be a link to a news website that talks about the same topic or even Wikipedia
Backlinks
11. Submit your website to a directory that offers a link back to you.
12. Add a ‘Link to Us’ section on your page. Something like ‘If you liked this’, ‘If you think this is useful’ etc. So I may add ‘If you liked this why not link to me <a href=”http://www.neilthurlwell.co.uk/2008/08/higher-rankings-in-15-minuteshigher-rankings-in-15-minutes/“>Higher Search Engine Rankings in just 15 Minutes</a>’
13. If you can, add Social Bookmarking links to your website. Websites like Delicious, Digg and StumbleUpon and just a few.
Page Content
14. Add a ‘Call to Action’ at the bottom of every page. A ‘Call to Action’ is the action you want the reader to take no that they have go to the bottom of the page. You may want to add your phone number so they can call you, a link to your contact page, a buy now button. Tell them to do something.
15. If your name is added to the page as the author like in blogs, then use your name rather than your company name or ‘admin’. This adds a level of trust to your page for the reader as they know the name of the person who wrote it.
